Meet Our Speakers

Dr Annaliese van Diemen
Annaliese is a specialist Public Health Physician. She graduated from medicine at Monash University, going on to train as a General Practitioner before moving into Public Health medicine. Annaliese held several roles at the Department of Health, including Deputy Chief Health Officer (Communicable Disease) before joining the North Eastern Public Health Unit (NEPHU) in May 2021, and was appointed Director in October 2023.

Ms Sonja Elia
After choosing to specialise in Immunisation in 2003, Sonja worked at the Royal Children’s Hospital (RCH) Immunisation service for over 20 years and in 2017, became Victoria’s first Nurse Practitioner (NP) in the field of Immunisation. She is currently the Nursing Lead of the Workforce Immunisation Unit at Austin Health. She is a current member of the Immunisation Coalition, a teaching associate with Monash University NP program and holds an honorary position with the University of Melbourne.

Ms Karen Bellamy
Kaz Bellamy is an Infectious Diseases and Immunisation Nurse Practitioner with specialist expertise in high-risk, antenatal, and travel immunisation. Kaz has played a key role in developing adult and paediatric immunisation sedation pathways at Monash Health. With extensive experience in vaccine safety and vaccine-preventable disease research across both adult and paediatric populations, Kaz brings strong clinical and research leadership to immunisation practice. Kaz is a current member of the Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI).

Dr Jessica Kaufman
Dr Jessica Kaufman is a Principal Research Fellow and leader of the Vaccine Social Science Team in the Vaccine Uptake Group at the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute. She is also an Honorary Fellow at The University of Melbourne, Burnet Institute, and La Trobe University. She is an expert in communication and social and behavioural science related to vaccination. Her research focuses on strategies to increase acceptance of vaccines across the lifespan.

Dr Sarah McGuiness
Dr Sarah McGuinness is an infectious diseases clinician–researcher at Monash University and the Alfred Hospital in Melbourne. Her research focuses on improving ways to prevent infectious diseases in at-risk populations, including travellers. Sarah leads the hospital-based travel clinic at the Alfred Hospital. She is a member of the Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI), serves on the International Society of Travel Medicine’s Travel Vaccines Task Force, is an Associate Editor for the Journal of Travel Medicine, and co hosts ISTM’s Travel Unravelled podcast.

Prof Allen Cheng
Prof Allen Cheng is an infectious diseases physician. He is Program Director of Medical Specialties at Monash Health and Professor of Infectious Diseases in the School of Clinical Sciences at Monash University. He was previously Co-Chair of the Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation, and the Chair of the Advisory Committee for Vaccines. In 2020-21, Prof. Cheng was the Victorian Deputy Chief Health Officer during the COVID-19 pandemic.
